Behind Semen Gresik's Green PROPER Award: Environmentally Friendly Operational Commitment and Regulatory Compliance

Rembang, February 21, 2022 – The consistency of PT Semen Gresik (PTSG) in delivering responsible and sustainable environmental management, which resulted in the achievement of the Green PROPER award in 2021, was inseparable from the company's commitment to environmentally friendly operations and compliance with prevailing regulations.

PTSG won the Green PROPER award since it met the beyond compliance standard, where the company complied with environmental regulations, provided adding values to energy conservation and committed to community empowerment.

The Head of the Communication and Corporate Social Responsibility Unit (CSR) of PTSG, Dharma Sunyata, asserted that PTSG's environmental management complied with and referred to the criteria of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), which strictly monitored the company's operations.

''We regularly monitor the ambient air quality, stack emissions, environmental noise, and groundwater level around the factory. The company's operations consistently implement environmentally sound strategies,'' said Sunyata in a press release on Monday (2/21).

In providing air management solutions, he added that the PTSG Rembang factory also implemented bag filter and Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) systems to capture dust and reduce emissions to a minimum level.

In addition, the company controlled air emissions of Sulfur Oxide (SOx) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) generated from the production process through the application of emission meters in the stack preheaters to ensure that the emissions did not exceed the allowed threshold. The measurement results were submitted automatically to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in periodic reports.

Furthermore, Sunyata continued, to support safe, healthy, and risk-free operational activities, PTSG applied noise control/mitigation strategies by complying with the Decree of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. KEP-48/MENLH/11/1996 concerning the allowable noise emission threshold in residential areas of 55 dB(A).

"Our team's measurement results in the fourth quarter of 2021 in ring 1 villages indicated a noise level ranged from 49 to 51 dB (A) or did not exceed the threshold limit," he said.

He added that the management of the long belt conveyor had been performed by conducting regular checks and maintenance. In addition to ensuring the smooth operation of the belt conveyor, PTSG ensured that the belt conveyor did not interfere with the activities of local residents, especially in terms of noise emissions.

''The results of periodic measurements conducted by an independent institution in 2021 on noise levels in the nearest settlement, Kajar Village, from which the belt conveyor was approximately 1-1.5 km away, revealed an average noise level of 47.5 dB(A) or below the allowed threshold. It is in line with the company's commitment to ensuring operational excellence in coexistence with the surrounding community," he said.

As evidence of its alignment with environmental management, Sunyata stated that, in addition to the Green PROPER award in 2021, PTSG also won several other awards, including the Green Industry Award for its success in implementing Level 5 (highest) Green Industry Principles, the Green Label Indonesia Certificate, and the Green Industry Award from the Ministry of Industry.

In addition, PTSG obtained the ISO 14001:2015 Certificate for its commitment and contribution to the environment to anticipate the carbon footprint and achieve a sustainable future and the ISO 50001:2018 Certificate for energy management.
