Semen Gresik Boosts Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR), Utilizing Waste as Alternative Energy
Rembang, July 14, 2022 – PT Semen Gresik (PTSG) has been committed to optimizing the use of Alternative Fuel & Raw Materials (AFR) to achieve sustainable operations.
AFR as a thermal substitution rate (TSR) utilized in the cement production process includes rice husks, corn cobs, and leather waste.
Senior Manager of Communications and CSR of PTSG, Dharma Sunyata, emphasized that the volume of alternative fuels keeps growing yearly. The number of rice husks is expected to reach 200 tons per month this year, while the amount of leather waste is 100 tons per month. For comparison, 1 ton of rice husk can replace 0.2 tons of coal and 1 ton of leather waste can replace 1.05 tons of coal.
"The replacement of TSR resulting from the addition of main and alternative fuels has made positive progress with a target of 0.39% in 2022. This is in line with the company's roadmap on energy conservation, with the TSR target reaching 15 percent in 2026,'' Sunyata said in his press release.
By substituting the main fuel with alternative fuels, PTSG strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air emissions, and manage energy efficiency in the company's operations.
Sunyata continued that using alternative fuels is another method to offer long-term solutions in overcoming the domestic waste problem so that Semen Gresik has a good impact on the environment and the larger community.
''This measure is a strategic solution for handling agricultural waste in the area surrounding the factory to create an eco-friendly company and support the Government's program related to climate change,'' Sunyata stated.
Sunyata added that his party continues to increase the consumption of alternative fuels and seek various types of waste to accomplish the expected TSR target. Thus, the company continues to develop reliable environmental management systems, strive for energy efficiency, and reduce emissions in the long term.
