Semen Gresik's Commitment to Keep the Sky Blue
Rembang, July 24, 2020 – PT Semen Gresik is committed to conducting various company's activities sustainably, environmentally friendly, and based on government regulations. One manifestation of the commitment is by maintaining a clean and healthy air quality around the company, including both the villages in Rembang and Blora Regency.
It has been confirmed by Dharma Sunyata, the Head of Communication and Environmental Sustainability Unit of PT Semen Gresik, on the first day of the development that the plant in Rembang was designated to be eco-friendly and the most efficient in the Southeast Asia region. A variety of cutting-edge technologies in the cement business area is equipped in the Rembang Plant. One of them includes a filter bag or fabric filter, which is highly effective in collecting dust.
According to Dharma Sunyata, the performance of this pollution control unit is truly reliable. The results of measurements conducted by an institution that has been certified by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry indicates that the dust emission in this leading cement company and its surroundings is still below the quality standard set by the government.
The measurement was carried out in a number of points in the production process within the area of Rembang Plant of PT Semen Gresik during the two quarters or the first half of the year 2020.
Based on those points, the dust emission was recorded between 1 - 6 mg/Nm3. Meanwhile, according to the Regulation of Ministry of Environment and Forestry No P.19/MenLHK/Setjen/KUM.1/2/2017 concerning the Emissions Standard for Business and/or Activity of Cement Industry, the standard is set at 60 mg/Nm3.
“Throughout 2019, the results of the dust emission measurement in Rembang Plant had been below the standard. This is the real manifestation of Semen Gresik's commitment to keep the sky blue," said Dharma Sunyata, Friday (24/7/2020).
In addition, the measurement of the dust fallout and ambience in the villages around the plant also led to encouraging results. The process of the measurement was carried out at some points, such as the home yards of the residents of Timbrangan Village, Pasucen Village, Kadiwono Village, Kajar Village (Gunem Sub-district, Rembang Regency), and even Ngampel Village in Blora Sub-district, Blora Regency. The result was also below the standard set in the Decree of Central Java Governor No. 8 of 2001.
“In the end of 2019, Semen Gresik achieved Green Industry Certificate from the Ministry of Industry of Republic of Indonesia. We will always enhance this accomplishment," he admitted.
In separate location, the Head of the Rembang Environmental Education Center of Environment Agency, Budi Priyanggodo, states that until recently, there has been no report, complaint, or criticism received from the people regarding Semen Gresik's activities. They, in fact, encourage the companies in Rembang Regency to pay attention to their surrounding environments, including the quality of air, water, and the others.
"It should be the companies’ commitment. An industry should contribute to maintaining the sustainability of the environmental functions," he added.
