Utilizing Waste into Environmentally Friendly Energy, Semen Gresik Receives Visit from Rembang Regency Waste Management Team
Rembang, June 27th, 2024 – PT Semen Gresik, a subsidiary of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) synergizes with the Rembang Regency Government in the commitment to manage and utilize municipal waste into alternative fuel through Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) technology. The follow-up of the collaboration reached the survey stage from the Rembang district government waste management team and consulting partners to the Rembang Factory.
Senior Manager of Communication & CSR PT Semen Gresik, Sulistyono said that this visit was a follow-up to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rembang district government, regarding how the company's readiness as an off-taker for waste management with the RDF system.
"The need for a more environmentally friendly energy transition is the focus of the company which continues to be pursued in various ways, one of which is the utilization of waste. In accordance with the planning, the company proposes RDF needs in accordance with the capacity of up to 20 tph (tons per hour)," he explained.
"In strengthening the commitment to the use of new renewable energy with RDF management, in addition to establishing cooperation with the Rembang Regency Government, Semen Gresik has also established cooperation with the Jepara Regency Government and explored potential cooperation with the city of Denpasar," Sulistyono explained.
In addition, in the use of alternative energy or alternative fuel & raw materials (AFR), the company has shifted some of its energy needs from fossil sources to environmentally friendly energy sources, including solar power and biomass.
"There are 30 solar cell panels or solar power plants installed with a capacity of 14.55 kWp (kilowatt peak). Meanwhile, in the thermal substitution rate (TSR) program which was successfully achieved by 2% in 2023, the company uses rice husks, corn cobs (cobs), plastic packaging, solid waste in the form of waste from industrial activities (packaging waste, bags, shoes, used fabrics), to liquid waste (oil, used grease, and glycryn pitch)," he explained.
The company has also 100% converted the use of fuel oil (BBM) into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) energy for the production operations of the Rembang Mill's Finish Mill equipment.
From various strategic initiatives and innovations in contributing to environmental protection, including the fossil fuel conversion program to environmentally friendly energy sources, the company has recorded many achievements. Among them are successfully obtaining the Green Proper 2023 award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry for 3 consecutive years and the Best Appreciation of Good Mining Practice (GMP) 2023 from the Central Java ESDM Office as well as the Tamasya Awards 2023 by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
