Planting Trees in the Factory Area, Semen Gresik Committed to Implementing Green Industry Principle

Rembang, February 12, 2021 - PT Semen Gresik (SG) carried out a tree planting activity as well as inaugurated Waroeng Binaan or The Wabi, a food center in the area around the SG Rembang factory on Thursday (02/11). Subhan, SG President Director, said that this tree planting was the company's commitment to preserving the environment.

As a part of PT Semen Indonesia Tbk. (Persero) or SIG, Subhan said that the green industry principle was the primary commitment Semen Gresik must apply in the production process and environmental management.

"The commitment to preserving the environment must certainly begin with the face of the company, which is the area around PT Semen Gresik's Rembang Factory," said Subhan in the press release.

Subhan continued that the reforestation of the area around the factory through a tree-planting program has been carried out for several years. In the future, this program would be a sustainable activity by planting trees in several open spaces and other areas considered potential around the factory.

According to Subhan, the future trend of the cement industry prioritizing sustainable innovation and environmental conservation should be supported by other supporting programs. "Thus, Semen Gresik's vision and missions as the most efficient and eco-friendly cement company in Southeast Asia could be achieved," said Subhan.

In addition, Subhan mentioned the tree types planted in the factory area are fruit trees. Those trees could grow more than two-meter highs, such as longan, dalhari water apple, to various types of mango (gadung, manalagi, jumbo kiojay).

Subhan explained that they chose those types of trees because they generated health benefits, full of nutrition, high-value sales, and low maintenance. Additionally, those fruit trees could reduce the climate change impact, increase groundwater reserves, prevent pollution, maintain living things, and prevent flooding. "Later on, the fruits from the trees we have planted will be distributed to the community around the factory," said Subhan.

On the same occasion, Semen Gresik inaugurated The Wabi involving six Village-owned Enterprises (BUMDes) from Kajar, Timbrangan, Pasucen, Tegaldowo, Kadiwono, and Ngampel Villages located in Blora.

According to Subhan, since its existence in 2014, the Wabi has become an essential part of the long journey of the Rembang Factory's operational history. He said that Semen Gresik has a high passion and commitment to supporting economic independence and local sovereignty of the local community around the Company through the presence of The Wabi. "Therefore, a positive ecosystem will be built between the community and the Company," he concluded.
