Semen Gresik & Jepara Regency Government Foster Collaboration for Urban Waste Management into Alternative Fuel through RDF System
Rembang, September 12th 2023 – PT Semen Gresik collaborates with the Jepara Regency Government in their commitment to managing and utilizing urban waste as an alternative fuel in the cement production process through Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) technology, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Jepara Regent's Office (11/9).
The President Director of PT Semen Gresik, Muchamad Supriyadi, stated that the issue of urban waste requires special attention. Therefore, this collaboration is a suitable step to reduce waste while aligning with the company's commitment to environmentally friendly operations through the utilization of alternative fuel RDF. He expressed his pleasure in being invited by the Regent to become an off-taker in this remarkable waste management project using the RDF system. In the cement industry, energy is a primary need for company operations," he explained.
Supriyadi added that this memorandum of understanding aligns with Semen Gresik's focus on one of its main strategic initiatives, which is to optimize the transition from fossil fuel-based energy to more environmentally friendly energy sources. "By using waste as a suitable substitute fuel, we hope to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, namely coal," he clarified.
In addition to RDF, Semen Gresik currently utilizes alternative fuels in the form of biomass (rice husks), solid waste from industrial activities (packaging waste, bags, shoes, used rags), and liquid waste (used oil and grease, glycerin pitch).
Meanwhile, the Acting Regent of Jepara, Edy Supriyanta, welcomed the collaboration with Semen Gresik. He revealed data from the Jepara Regency Environmental Agency (DLH) indicating that an average of 150 tons of waste enters the landfill in Jepara Regency daily. "Our hope is that through this collaboration, we can reduce waste and make our city clean and habitable. Therefore, we will push for the RDF processing system to be realized successfully”.
